How Ground Power Unit Works

GPUs are usually installed on the tarmac at airports

I. Basic Functions and Composition

GPUs are usually installed on the tarmac at airports and are mobile or stationary power sources that provide the required power to the aircraft by connecting to it. This power is mainly used to support the various operations of the aircraft during ground parking, such as starting engines, charging, air conditioning, lighting, etc.

GPUs are usually equipped with generators, converters, and distribution systems to ensure that the power supplied is compatible with the aircraft’s electrical system.

II. Workflow

  • Connection and startup

When an aircraft is parked on the apron and requires external power, the GPU is moved near the aircraft and connected to the aircraft’s interface via a cable. The operator connects the GPU through the switching device and starts the generator to start generating electricity.

  • Power Conversion

The raw power generated by the generator (usually AC) needs to go through a series of conversion and processing before it can be supplied to the aircraft.

First, the AC power will be converted to DC power through a rectifier to meet the needs of the airplane’s DC power equipment.

Next, the power transformer will adjust the voltage to a level suitable for use by the aircraft and perform voltage stabilization to ensure the stability and reliability of the output voltage.

In this process, the filter will filter the current, remove the interference signal and ripple in it, and improve the power quality.

  • Power Distribution

The converted and processed power will be delivered to the various equipment of the airplane through the distribution system, such as engines, communication equipment, navigation equipment, flight control system, etc.

After receiving the power, these equipment will be connected to the power supply. After receiving power, these equipments can start and run normally to support various operations of the airplane on the ground.

III.special features and applications

Some GPUs also have maintenance functions, which can provide temporary power for aircraft maintenance.

In the aircraft maintenance or inspection, the need to test the aircraft’s various equipment, these tests usually require a large amount of power, which is provided by the GPU.
